Seriously—how amazing is it that we can copy, scan, print, and even fax right from our homes or businesses? A full in-house print shop at your fingertips. But let’s be honest—operating printers can get expensive.

That’s why Just Ink exists.

We recognized the gap: people needed a smarter, more affordable alternative to buying new cartridges every time. So we stepped up—and started offering refilled, cleaned, and tested cartridges at a fraction of the cost.

Was this always the dream job? Not exactly.

But it became something even better.

I love what I do. I love our team. And I love the service we provide to our amazing customers—many of whom we’ve been serving for over 25 years. Some days, I’m just driving around town, listening to music, and delivering cartridges to smiling faces. It’s hard to beat that kind of workday!

Even when I’m off the clock, I’m thinking about the business—how to make it better, more efficient, and more helpful for the people we serve.

And we do more than just refill ink.

We troubleshoot, offer guidance, and reduce stress when printers aren’t cooperating. We test every cartridge before it leaves our store to ensure top-quality results—often at half the price of new ones.

A Day in the Life of a Small Business Owner

What’s your daily routine as a business owner?

Running a small business means wearing many hats—and no two days are exactly the same. But over time, I’ve built a rhythm that keeps things moving smoothly and ensures our customers get the reliable service they’ve come to expect.

My day kicks off with a 7:00 AM drive to our first store location. I spend the first half-hour checking things over—making sure everything is clean, stocked, and ready to go. Then it’s time to prep the day’s deliveries. Between 8:30 and 9:30, I usually hit the road to deliver printer cartridges to our local customers.

At 10:00 AM, our second store opens. I head there to take care of any unfinished orders from the previous day, check emails, and process online orders from the website. Once things are caught up, the rest of the day becomes a mix of helping walk-in customers and working on marketing and projects that help the business grow.

Afternoons stay productive but balanced. I often return to tasks from the morning while making time for food and fitness—I’ve set up a small area in the back of the store with weights and cardio equipment. It’s a great way to reset my energy and stay healthy in the middle of a long workday.

As we approach closing time, I shift gears into prep mode: organizing inventory, restocking shelves, and planning for the next day. Our second store closes at 4:00 PM, which marks the beginning of final tasks—like making one last delivery, doing a supply run, swinging by the bank, or taking care of recycling.

It's a full day, but it's meaningful work. Serving the community, helping people save money, and building something sustainable—it's why I started this journey, and it's what keeps me going.

Here are the top three worst reasons why Instant Ink programs can be terrible:

1. Ink Stops Working If You Cancel

If you cancel your subscription, your Instant Ink cartridges stop working, even if they still have ink left. You're forced to buy new cartridges immediately.

2. You’re Locked Into a Monthly Fee

Even if you don’t print much, you still pay every month. If you don’t use all your allotted pages, you’re essentially wasting money.

3. Delays in Ink Delivery

The program promises automatic ink shipments, but delays happen. If your ink runs out before a new cartridge arrives, you’re stuck without a working printer.

Facts vs. Fiction 

One of the most challenging situations at Just Ink is when customers bring in cartridges they claim are not working, but in reality, they are bringing in used and empty printer cartridges. Printer cartridges are easily mistaken for full ones. Two things can help prevent this confusion:

Remove and discard or recycle any plastic wrapping material. Some people are very meticulous and repackage old toners, making them accidentally appear new when reopened.Write "MT" or "Empty" directly on the cartridge to make it obvious that it is used. 

Clearly marking empty cartridges is a smart idea. I've had some very challenging conversations with people who refuse to believe a cartridge is empty, even when I provide multiple facts proving it.

Take, for instance, those who come in expecting a tattoo appointment at our ink store—I often find myself explaining that I may not meet their exact tattoo expectations. I have a business that only exists because brand-name ink & toner is very expensive. These companies spend millions on marketing to make billions. Their current strategy is to update your printer software via the internet.

When this happens, it may lock you out from printing if you haven't turned off automatic software updates. They now put small computer chips on all their cartridges with the intent to frustrate you by locking you out of printing, then selling you a brand-name option to prevent it from happening again.

It works! This week, Brother locked a customer out from printing, and the customer rewarded Brother by buying $500 worth of brand-name products from me instead of their usual compatible version.
