Printer types

What are the two main types of printers?

The most common types of printers you find on the market are inkjet printers and laser printers. Inkjet printers use a liquid ink which is sprayed on the paper to produce prints and laser printers use a a fine powder that melts onto the paper to produce prints. Inkjet printers are commonly sold for home use mainly due to their low purchase cost. Laser printers are more frequently purchased by businesses since their cartridge capacity is usually much larger. Both types of printers can be used in either environment.

LOW

The message TONER LOW or INK LOW appears on the printer display or computer monitor when one of the toner or ink cartridges is estimated to be running low, but the cartridge has not probably not reached the end of it's life. This is an alert the toner or ink cartridge will reach its end of life in the near future. It's always a good idea to have a back up cartridge ready to replace since many printers will lock you out from printing when an empty message appears.

Can you print with just one ink cartridge?

Most printers are designed to stop printing when an ink cartridge is empty or has printed it's designated number of prints. This is to prevent damage to the printhead and also to force you to buy a replacement cartridge. Some printers will allow printing though so it's a good idea to explore this option just in case. If you email us your questions we are always happy to find the answer for you.

Is toner cheaper than ink? PART 1

 Part 1

A black only laser printer or multifunction printer is by far the most economical choice for a home owner or small business.  The initial printer cost may be higher but the consumables which are the bulk cost of using a printer will be substantially lower. The cost of consumables or printer cartridges should be looked at as a cost per page number. What is the page yield rating vs the cost of the cartridge.  An inkjet cartridge may have a replacement value of $25 while a toner cartridge could cost $50. Although the page yield gives a different story when you find out the inkjet is rated at 120 pages while the toner cartridge is rated at 2,500 pages.

Print Colours Look Different Than On-Screen

Colour science is complicated, and getting your print to look like the preview on the screen is way more complex that you might assume. Professional printers use specifically calibrated, colour accurate screens tuned to match the same colour space as their printers. This ensures that what the designer sees on the screen will look the same as the final print. Getting a colour print to match the on-screen preview isnt a realistic goal for most home owners. Manual calibrations may assist is bringing the preview and the print to a closer match.
